The General Secretary of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, His Eminence Sheikh Qais Khazali, confirmed today (Saturday) that the political process in Iraq is the most advanced in the Arab region, despite the challenges it has faced.
Sheikh Al-Khazali said during a televised interview, “The political process in Iraq is considered the most advanced and best process among all Arab countries, as it enjoys free elections, peaceful transfer of power, freedom of expression, a clear constitution, and specific mechanisms”.
His Eminence added that the political system in Iraq is witnessing an advanced stage compared to the monarchies and dictatorships in the region, pointing out that this system has gone through different stages since 2003, including the management of an occupation, military and civil authority, and reaching multiple elections, which contributed to the gradual stability of the political situation.
Commenting on the criticism directed at the ruling class in Iraq, Sheikh Al-Khazaali explained: “If the problem is with the ruling class, then the one who is posing the problem is part of it, and corruption is not limited to the Shiite ruling class only, but there is similar corruption among others.
His Eminence stressed the need to work on increasing the people’s awareness and clarifying the mechanism of change through elections, as the Iraqi constitution provides the necessary mechanisms for this.
Sheikh Al-Khazali also pointed out the importance of the consensus system that was established after 2003, stressing that it contributed to the stability of the political situation, indicating that “the consensus system in Iraq means distributing positions among the different components, but the differences lie in the details, and if this system is replaced by another project, that will threaten the stability of Iraq.”
Sheikh Al-Khazali stressed the necessity of amending the current political system gradually, as happened in some countries such as France, which witnessed constitutional amendments that led to the stability of the system there, stressing his support for comprehensive constitutional amendments after studying the Iraqi experience to correct the shortcomings, and then the system will correct itself by itself.
His Eminence also called for the submission of clear alternative projects by those who object to the current regime, warning that any new political project must be well thought out and take into consideration the Iraqi reality.
