Member of the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee for the Sadiqoon, Rafiq Al-Salihi, stressed today, Monday, the necessity of protecting national agricultural production, while calling on the Prime Minister to intervene urgently.
Al-Salihi said in a press statement, “Protecting local products, including tomatoes, is a national duty, despite their local availability”.
He added, “The Agriculture Committee addressed the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture to ban the import of vegetables, including tomatoes”.
He pointed out that “the tomato crop is produced in many farms in Karbala and Najaf, but the largest quantity is in Al-Zubair district in Basra, and it covers the needs of local markets”.
He added, “Iraq is an agriculturally rich country if the agricultural sector is invested in properly and unofficial smuggling outlets are closed”.
