Member of the Parliamentary Oil, Gas and Energy Committee for the Sadiqoon, Zainab Al-Moussawi, revealed today (Sunday) that political parties were behind the exclusion of the Korean Kogas Company from the Akkas gas field development project and the referral of the contract to a fictitious Ukrainian company, noting that millions of dollars were seized without any noteworthy achievement on the ground.
Al-Moussawi said in a press statement that “the Ukrainian company was diagnosed as a fake only two months after signing the contract last year,” indicating that “it only has a website and does not actually exist, and it lacks experience in the field of gas investment, especially in the Akkas gas field in Anbar Governorate, which is the second largest gas field in the Middle East”.
Al-Moussawi added that “political parties greatly benefited from the exclusion of the Korean company Kogas, and referred the contract to the fictitious Ukrainian company, which led to the seizure of millions of dollars,” stressing that “despite the passage of nearly a year since the signing of the contract in April 2024, the company has not started any development or production work in the field”.
She pointed out that “Iraq is currently experiencing a severe crisis in its need for gas, especially with the cancellation of the US exemption to import Iranian gas, which may exacerbate the electricity crisis during the coming summer”.
It is noteworthy that the contract signed between the Iraqi Central Oil Company and the Ukrainian company Yorkism Risos aimed to produce 100 MMcf within one year, reaching 400 MMcf within four years, but after a year the Ukrainian company did not fulfill any of its obligations, which raises questions about the fate of the contract and the wasted funds.
