The General Secretary of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, His Eminence Sheikh Qais Khazali, confirmed on Sunday that the priorities of the new US administration in the Middle East revolve around the Israeli entity and the Islamic Republic of Iran, noting that the threats issued by the United States, whether official or unofficial, public or private, have the primary goal of pushing Iran to negotiate, not Iraq.
Sheikh Khazali said in a televised interview that Iraq is not among the priorities of current American policy, stressing that Iraq’s sovereign decisions must be based on the interests of the Iraqi people, and not on reactions to the positions of the American administration, stressing that “Iraq is a sovereign country, and proceeds from good relations with neighboring countries, and is supposed to put its own interests before foreign interests”.
His Eminence also pointed out that the US administration, despite its influence, is not able to impose everything it wants, citing its failure to implement its plans in Gaza, stressing that Iraq must make its decisions based on its national interests and not according to Washington’s positions, saying: “Not everything Trump wants will happen”.
Regarding the energy file, Sheikh Al-Khazali stressed that Iraq depends on Iranian gas to operate its power stations, asking: “If the gas stops, will Trump give us electricity?” He criticized the American policies that hinder Iraq from obtaining its energy needs, and rejected linking Iraq to the Arab energy system due to the insufficient quantities available.
Sheikh Khazali also rejected any attempt to impose normalization with Israel on Iraq, stressing that the Iraqi people and political forces will not accept this, pointing out that the United States is trying to use economic and political pressure tools to impose its will, but Iraq has strategic alternatives to protect its interests.
At the end of his speech, Sheikh Al-Khazali stressed that Iraq needs a unified political decision supported by the people, pointing out that previous experiences have proven that unity of national decision is the only way to confront external pressures and protect Iraqi sovereignty.
