The General Secretary of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, His Eminence Sheikh Qais Khazali, confirmed today (Tuesday) that the Iraqi people enjoy a free will and no party can impose its choices on them, stressing that stability in Iraq was achieved thanks to the sacrifices of the Mujahideen and the blood that was shed for the sake of the homeland.
Sheikh Al-Khazali said in his speech on the occasion of “Resistant Martyr Day” that betting on the role of the United States in determining the future of Iraq is an “illusion,” considering that whoever thinks that there is an opportunity through US President Donald Trump is “suspect,” because the latter does not have the ability to decide the fate of the will of the Iraqi people.
His Eminence added that despite its influence, America was unable to appoint or confirm a prime minister for Iraq, explaining that it was only able to impose a prime minister once, but that experience was a “failure,” indicating that choosing the prime minister was always a decision taken in its entirety by the Iraqi people and political forces.
Regarding the role of the religious authority, Sheikh Al-Khazali explained that the authority could have a say in choosing the prime minister if it saw fit to intervene, stressing that the path to the highest executive position in Iraq passes through political forces and elections.
His Eminence also stressed that anyone aspiring to the premiership must be part of the political process and run in elections, warning that seeking the position with American support is a “losing bet.”
