The Member of Parliament for the Sadiqoon, Ali Turki Al-Jamali, confirmed on Friday that there is insistence by the parliament presidency and some political blocs on not including the Popular Mobilization Law on the agenda of the House of Representatives sessions, stressing that his bloc will not attend any session whose agenda does not include a vote on this law.
Al-Jamali said during a televised interview that the main point of contention that hinders the passage of the law is related to the retirement age, stressing that there are strong pressures aimed at either restructuring the Popular Mobilization Forces or obstructing the legislation of its law, while he pointed out that the Sadiqoon and State of Law blocs are the only two parties that are seriously demanding the passage of the law.
Al-Jamali pointed out that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sent messages to the leaders of the political blocs to remove the Popular Mobilization Law from the parliament’s agenda, ruling out that it would be included in the upcoming sessions, especially with the presence of Faleh al-Fayyadh, head of the Popular Mobilization Authority, on al-Sudani’s electoral list, which al-Jamali sees as a major reason for not passing the law.
Al-Jamali explained that neighboring countries and others are afraid of the Popular Mobilization Forces because it has become an influential security force, considering that some “detained” political figures are obstructing the approval of the law, even though all factions under the banner of the Mobilization Forces are waiting for it to be voted on.
Al-Jamali also stressed the need for Al-Fayadh to proceed with the affairs of the Popular Mobilization Forces away from personal interests, because the fate of 200,000 fighters should not be held hostage by political and electoral calculations.
