Al-Bujari: There is no official request from the Ministry of Communications to ban TikTok, and the decision rests with the Council of Ministers.
Zahra Al-Bajari, head of the Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee and representative of the Sadiqoon, confirmed on Sunday that the Transport and Communications Committee has not received any official request from the Ministry of Communications regarding blocking the TikTok app in Iraq.
In a press statement, Al-Bujari expressed her surprise at the Minister of Communications’ announcement that she was awaiting Parliament’s response before proceeding with the blocking decision, noting that “there is no official letter or request in this regard from the ministry”.
She added, “The Ministry of Communications must exercise vigilance in monitoring inappropriate content and operate within legal and administrative procedures,” while stressing that “the decision to block websites, including TikTok, is not made directly by the Ministry of Communications, but rather requires prior approval from the Council of Ministers”.
Al-Bujari explained that Parliament had submitted an official request to the Cabinet to ban the TikTok app, after collecting a large number of signatures from MPs. This request was in response to public demands and to protect society from inappropriate content.
