Salam al-Jazairi, a member of the political bureau of the Sadiqoon, confirmed on Tuesday that the continued presence of some ambassadors in their posts after they have passed the legal age is a violation of the law and is motivated by partisan interests. He called for opening the door to nominations for vacant diplomatic posts.
Al-Jazairi said in a press statement that “the continued employment of a number of ambassadors despite reaching retirement age represents an exception to the general rule that stipulates termination of service upon reaching the legal age”.
He added, “This exception is often made based on the recommendation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, but unfortunately, these recommendations are based on illegal justifications that clearly conflict with the country’s current civil service and retirement laws”.
He explained that “among the most prominent justifications advanced by the Foreign Minister are: experience and competence, continuity in managing sensitive issues, the lack of a suitable alternative, and political and security circumstances.” He emphasized that “none of these reasons are based on legal or objective criteria, but rather reflect narrow partisan interests”.
Al- Jazairi pointed out that “the Council of Ministers had previously reviewed a list of ambassadors nominated for renewal, but the vote on the extension was rejected within the Council,” noting that “legal complaints will soon be filed against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its refusal to open nominations for these positions”.
