The General Secretary of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, Sheikh Qais Khazali, affirmed on Thursday that what is happening within the Coordination Framework is not a matter of disagreements, but rather of natural differences in viewpoints. He emphasized that these differences have not affected the unity of the framework, its continued coordination role, or its adoption of unified positions on important issues.
During a televised interview, Sheikh Khazali said that differences within the framework have existed since its inception, but they have not affected its cohesion or its ability to fulfill its role in coordinating positions on national issues. He added, “These differences have never affected the unity of the framework, its continued coordinating role, or its adoption of positions on important issues that require a position”.
Regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections, His Eminence explained that the Coordination Framework’s decision, as in the provincial council elections, is to field multiple lists, with each party within the framework assessing its own interests based on its own vision, particularly given the implementation of the electoral law known as “Sainte-Laguë 1.7”.
His Eminence emphasized that electoral pluralism represents a political interest, adding: “It is not in the electoral interest for the Framework to be included on one list, or even two. Pluralism is the electoral interest that achieves political interest, if the Framework’s multiple lists will be included in the same pot after the elections. This is what was agreed upon, and it also includes mixed governorates”.
Sheikh Al-Khazaali pointed out that the recent statement on the elections was inaccurate in its wording, saying, “It is not necessary for all mixed governorates to have a single electoral list. There may be more than one list in some of these governorates.” He explained that this is done through internal agreement and consideration of the interests of each governorate.
Regarding the future of the Coordination Framework, His Eminence Sheikh Al- Khazali considered the framework’s performance at the current stage to be successful, but it will not be sufficient to confront the challenges ahead.
His Eminence believed that keeping the framework in its coordinating role in the next phase would not meet aspirations, and would alter its performance and lead to the drafting of internal regulations. He emphasized that the shift toward internal organization is the most appropriate considering the current political changes.
In another context, Sheikh Al-Khazali pointed to the possibility of a shift in political power and influence in the upcoming elections, noting that there are indications of the emergence of new political forces in the electoral landscape.
His Eminence also expressed his welcome for the Sadrist movement’s return to the framework, noting that the framework is a broad umbrella that embraces and welcomes everyone, including the movement that was previously part of the framework.
Sheikh Al- Khazali concluded by stating that the framework, as it represents the political majority, will have a decisive and influential role in the nomination of the next prime minister, adding that this is a clear and constant issue in the Iraqi political landscape.
