The General Secretary of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, His Eminence Sheikh Qais Khazali, confirmed today (Saturday) that what Syria witnessed during the year 2024 represents an international political project completely different from the events of the year 2011, which carried terrorist motives that aimed to incite chaos and sectarian strife in Syria, Iraq and the region.
Sheikh Khazali said during a televised interview that the first days of the events in Syria in 2024 were somewhat ambiguous, but with the passage of time it became clear that they were not an extension of the events of 2011, but rather a Turkish project supported or approved internationally, with the presence of an American-Zionist consensus in its early stages.
His Eminence explained that the armed factions that are leading the scene today, such as the “Jabhat Tahrir al-Sham”, are the same ones that were operating under the name “Jabhat al-Nusra” in 2011, with the same leadership and elements with some formal updates.
Commenting on the statements of the leader of the “Jabhat Tahrir al-Sham”, known as “al-Julani”, Sheikh Khazali said: “The issue is not about words, but about actions”, stressing that al-Julani is wanted by the judiciary in Iraq on charges related to his activities within al-Qaeda and ISIS, as he was a prominent leader in all those stages.
Regarding Iraq’s position on these developments, His Eminence Sheikh Al-Khazali pointed out that what is happening in Syria represents a direct threat to Iraqi national security, stressing that the Iraqi state must take a clear decision in this regard, indicating that the threat this time is not related to protecting religious shrines as it was in 2011, but rather threatens the stability of the Iraqi state.
His Eminence added that the resistance factions believe that this time the intervention should be by an official decision from the Iraqi state, explaining that the Coordination Body for the Iraqi Resistance had sent a message in this regard to the Coordination Framework during an official meeting attended by the Prime Minister on December 2.
Regarding the field situation on the Syrian-Iraqi border, Sheikh Khazali pointed out that the Syrian side is witnessing the presence of armed groups supported externally, including groups trained at the Tanf base, stressing that they include Takfiri elements alongside the so-called “Free National Army”.
His Eminence pointed out that Iraq is required to secure its borders completely, calling for a unified position by the Iraqi state to confront these challenges, whether by sending the army or the Popular Mobilization Forces, expressing the resistance’s readiness to support any decision that serves the interests of Iraqi national security.
