Habib al-Halawi, head of the Sadiqoon parliamentary, rejected on Tuesday, the secret agreement signed with Turkey, and called for the Foreign Minister and those involved in signing the agreement to be questioned.
Al-Halawi said in a press conference held in the House of Representatives, “Iraq’s sovereignty and the dignity of its people are of great importance to all Iraqis, government, people, and political forces”.
He added, “The homeland has sacrificed precious blood in defense of itself, and has rejected any violation or transgression against it from any party, especially the Turkish side, which continues to penetrate Iraqi territory and occupy vast areas as an extension of Ankara’s expansionist approach and aggressive projects, in addition to the continuation of daily attacks on villages, mountainous areas, and agricultural lands, resulting in martyrs and wounded”.
He continued: “In light of all this, everyone is surprised that the government held a meeting and reached an agreement with the Turkish side regarding important security and economic issues without being informed by the representatives or political forces, whether in the Coordination Framework or the State Administration Coalition. This constitutes a violation and transgression of the constitution”.
Al-Halawi stressed that the Sadiqoon bloc rejects any agreement or joint meeting held by the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Turkey without presenting the contents of the agreement or the objectives of the joint meeting to the Speaker of Parliament and the relevant committees. He stressed “the unity and sovereignty of Iraq and the necessity of withdrawing all occupying foreign forces from Iraqi territory, and for Turkey to evacuate its military bases from northern Iraq due to the danger of Türkiye’s projects in the region”.
Regarding economic matters, Al-Halawi called for “obligating Turkey to release Iraq’s full water share and not exploiting the water war with Iraq to control the livelihood of its people, which would impact Iraqi agriculture and livestock. He also called for Turkey to fulfill its previous pledges, none of which have been implemented and which remain ink on paper”.
The head of the Sadiqoon parliamentary also called for “the formation of an investigative committee from the parliamentary security and defense committee to verify intelligence and security information regarding the Nineveh Guard and Kirkuk Shield forces, and to question the foreign minister and those involved to clarify the truth about the meeting held with the Turkish side and inform the public of the true results”.
