The Sadiqoon parliamentary rejects the security agreement with Ankara and demands the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Iraq and the hosting of the Minister of Defense.

The Sadiqoon parliamentary issued a statement on Wednesday expressing its strong rejection of what it described as a “violation and transgression” of Iraqi sovereignty. This was in reference to the recent security and economic agreement concluded between the Iraqi government and Turkey, without the knowledge or awareness of the contents of the agreement between the House of Representatives and other political forces.
In its statement, the bloc affirmed that “Iraq’s sovereignty and the dignity of its people are national constants that cannot be compromised. Iraqis have sacrificed precious blood in defense of them and in rejection of any violation of them, especially by Turkey, which continues to penetrate Iraqi territory and occupy vast areas, in a clear extension of Ankara’s expansionist policies and aggressive projects”.
The statement added that “the ongoing Turkish attacks on villages, mountainous areas, and agricultural lands are causing daily deaths and injuries, which requires a firm national stance.” It expressed surprise that “the government concluded an agreement with Turkey on security and economic issues without consulting parliamentarians or involving political forces, especially within the Coordination Framework or the State Administration Coalition,” considering it “a clear violation of the constitution”.
In its statement, the bloc outlined a number of demands and positions, most notably its rejection of any agreement or joint meeting between the government or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish side without its submission to the Parliament’s presidency and relevant committees. The bloc asserted that “the withdrawal of Turkish forces from the Bashiqa area must be a fundamental condition of any agreement”.
The bloc also stressed Iraq’s unity and sovereignty, and the need to withdraw all foreign forces from Iraqi territory without exception. It called on Turkey to evacuate its military bases from northern Iraq, warning of “the danger of Ankara’s projects in the region and its continued interference in Syrian and Iraqi affairs,” adding that “the fall of the current Turkish regime could be one of the signs of the failure of these policies”.
The statement highlighted the bloc’s insistence on guaranteeing Iraq’s water rights, and its demand that Turkey release Iraq’s full water share without exploiting it as a pressure card that would affect citizens’ livelihood, agriculture, and livestock. It also called on Turkey to fulfill its previous pledges, “none of which have been implemented to date, and which remain ink on paper”.
At the conclusion of the statement, the bloc called for hosting the Minister of Defense and security officials to “discuss the details of the agreement signed with Türkiye and the extent to which it violates national sovereignty, the Iraqi constitution, and applicable laws”.
