Zainab al-Moussawi, affirmed on Tuesday that the anniversary of the fall of Mosul to the terrorist ISIS gangs represents one of the darkest moments in modern Iraqi history. She pointed to the need to remember the lessons and morals of this national catastrophe and honor the heroism of the Iraqi people who confronted terrorism.
“This painful occasion brings us to our senses with hearts filled with sadness, but also with pride and determination,” Al-Moussawi said in a press statement issued today to mark the anniversary of the fall of Mosul on June 10, 2014. “The fall of Mosul was a major national shock and revealed the extent of the internal and external conspiracy that surrounded Iraq and targeted its unity and sovereignty”.
Al-Moussawi emphasized the need for a moment of reflection and accountability years after this tragedy, asserting that “Iraq was not defeated. Rather, its people rose up quickly, and the faithful masses responded to the call of the supreme religious authority with the fatwa of sufficient jihad, which served as a springboard for the formation of the blessed Popular Mobilization Forces, which constituted the cornerstone of the greater victory”.
Al-Moussawi praised the role of the security forces, including the army, federal police, and counter-terrorism service, and their integration on the ground with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), in liberating Mosul after fierce battles. She said they “sacrificed their precious blood for the sake of their homeland, proving that Iraq’s will is unbreakable”.
Al-Moussawi also renewed her pledge to “the righteous martyrs that their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” affirming that the legislative authority will continue its work to build a strong state that respects its institutions, holds accountable those who are corrupt and involved in surrendering the land to terrorism, and will not hesitate to uncover the truth and achieve justice.
Al-Moussawi continued, “Mosul will remain a symbol of steadfastness, victory, and patience, and its people will remain an example of defiance and resilience.” She prayed to God to protect Iraq and its people, have mercy on the martyrs, and grant the wounded a speedy recovery.
